Some of my favorite Derby activities with kids

  1. Running for the Roses: Put down artificial roses at the finish line and let the kids race to grab the roses! Bonus points if you make Derby hats, hobby horses, or dress the littles like horses, to wear or use in the race.
  2. Make “Derby” ice cream in a bag! Basically, make vanilla ice cream in a bag and add chocolate chips and some broken pecan pieces. (Omit the pecans obviously if any of the kids have nut allergies or are very young since they could be a choking hazard.)
  3. Make a hobby horse out of a pool noodle!
  4. Decorate Derby hats! See my previous post about a super easy way to do it with young kids.
  5. Cut off the horn of a wood craft unicorn and decorate a Derby horse.
  6. Draw/print a horse shape on paper and then used mixed media to decorate it like a galapalooza!
  7. Dress up fancy with your hat and watch the Derby! Make sure everyone picks their horse!
