Getting Ready for Mother’s Day & Father’s Day

We’ve had so much fun getting ready for Mother’s Day & Father’s Day this year! It helped that this year, we decided to make it easy on ourselves with some free printables from Kara Creates! I

My little buddy usually has to make a lot of cards, because she has a lot of grandparent figures and “aunties,” so she was super happy to have something pre-printed instead of having to write the words on a dozen cards when she has school and other activities going on! (She was so happy that she requested to make her Father’s Day cards 46 days early, so she could keep going with the handprints!) All of the cards on Kara Creates won’t fit an 8 year-old’s hands, so we chose the ones that worked for us from the free file she sent! I don’t know the blog creator or Kara, but I am so thankful for her!

In addition to using her handprint cards, we decided to decorate a tote bag from Michaels (Use their promo codes online for 20-40% off if you can find one). It came out really well! We used acrylic paints to decorate it. They are permanent on fabric, so make sure to wear old clothes or a smock. My original idea was to do the handprint heart, but then my 8-year-old friend said, “Can we do my footprints, too?” (Pro-tip: Do the footprints in the bathroom and go straight into the tub! She was old enough to sit on the side of the tub this year and just swing her feet around.)

Also, make sure to cut a piece of cardboard and put it inside the bag when painting it, so that the colors don’t soak through! That step is VERY IMPORTANT!

A few days later, we decided to make a beaded keychain and add it to the strap. My only tip for the keychain is to put a little drop of hot glue over the knots at the end. The clear plastic string we got from one of my friend’s bracelet kits was very slippery and making me a wee bit nervous! Haha. It came out so pretty!

I also got lucky and found this cute journal in the book section of the Dollar Tree and we used legal-sized paper to make a little book jacket for it and give it a homemade touch. (I’m not affiliated with them or Michael’s at this time, so that’s just a free shout-out to the stores to help you find the items we used if you happen to come across my blog! Maybe some day…. *wistful look. Haha!)

Here’s also a video round-up of other parent and grandparent gifts that I’ve helped kids make over the years! Sorry for the poor lighting and busy backgrounds in many of them. I’ve been doing this for a lot of years now and never envisioned I’d have a website when I took most of them (probably with an early iphone or maybe even with a real camera back in the day!)

I hope you enjoy celebrating your mamas and other loved ones this Mother’s Day, and thanks to all the mamas who have shared their kids with me over the years and to my own mama for giving me life!
