Tiny Easter Baskets
I decided to make tiny Easter baskets for some special American Girl dolls (to go with the drawstring/pillowcase Easter dresses and twist on bunny ears that I made last year), and why not make one for a special bear while I was at it, too? I’d hoped to take better photos and get one done for another child by this afternoon, but the spring pollen is REAL and I’m a little behind on my life because I’ve been coughing like crazy. (The pollen is so thick that I could see a layer of yellow pollen on my blue car yesterday, so it’s no surprise. I’m sick every April, and I think this year it’s a bit worse because from January-March it seemed to ALWAYS be raining in California.)
Anyway, about the Easter baskets. These are great for dolls, but would also look beautiful at each place setting on the Easter dinner table! Once I figured out what I was doing, it took about 30-40 minutes for basket, so leave yourself plenty of time if you go with the dinner table idea.
I made these out of paper cups, yarn, and a little hot glue and felt! For a few months now, I kept seeing videos similar to this one. I did modify it slightly, because by the time I finally made the baskets, I didn’t have the video in front of me and was just doing things from memory. I had to go back and search for a version of it to add here. Here are my modifications compared to what you seee in this particular video:
- I simply wound some yarn around the top to make the rim and then trimmed off any excess paper as close to the yarn as I could. I actually really like the braid at the top in this particular version of the craft (I’d seen a lot of videos over the last few months, but didn’t remember that detail!)
- I didn’t use double-sided tape on the bottom. I just used hot glue to get the yarn grounded in place and then wound it.
- I did not use a wire to make the handle. I actually used the original rim of the paper cup and wound yarn around it. Then I attached it with hot glue.
- I cut a circle of felt to put inside on the bottom of the cup. I also put a strip of felt around the inner edge of the baskets to hide any paper still showing and to help secure the handles.
- I filled my baskets with a little Easter grass, some tiny Eggs from the Dollar tree, and some little chicks I found. I didn’t really want candy getting mixed in with the dolls’ stuff, and I figured there would be an abundance of candy this weekend, plus I’m on a tight budget, so I printed some Easter jokes and put those inside the eggs. The kid seemed to enjoy that!
